All the hip-cool robot researchers these days are
building their own robot clone minions to carry out their evil bidding, and Zou Renti of the Xi'an Supermen Sculpture Institution has sure done his up right. The model, with a skin of silica gel which supposedly moves with lifelike movements, apparently doesn't have a name, but with looks like these we suppose it just passes itself off as Zou Renti when performing its nefarious deeds. In fact, we'd almost go so far as to suggest this bot has successfully navigated the
uncanny valley, 'cause we're having a pretty dang hard time telling which of these guys is which here. Renti and his clone are currently hanging out at the 2006 China Robot Expo in Beijing -- tomorrow the world!

The doppleganger is clearly the one on the left. Until these robot clones become sophisticated enough for me to transfer my consciousness into them, I will hold off on buying one. But when they do become advanced enough for it, the world should prepare itself for the immortal uclatommy robot overlord.
Dr. Love @ Oct 14th 2006 3:24PM
actually its the one on the right
Eddie @ Oct 14th 2006 3:31PM
Then one on the left is clearly the robot. The one on the right is alert enough to be looking at the camera, and be holding something in his hand, and smiling.

Ray @ Oct 14th 2006 4:52PM
The one on the left is real.

I, for one, welcome our indistinguishable from human doppelganger robotic overlords
Paul @ Oct 14th 2006 3:35PM
Sry for double posting here, but seriously... which one is the robot? I thought it was the one on the right....
tiuk @ Oct 14th 2006 3:35PM
Yeah, wow, I went with the one on the right being the human, but the fact that it took me a good 30 seconds and a few clues like him holding the paper and his skin tone looking a tiny bit more varied just to figure it out is pretty amazing. And frightening as hell.
Eddie @ Oct 14th 2006 3:36PM
The one on the left also had a bigger head, and oddly shaped mouth, as seen in the link.
Dr. Love @ Oct 14th 2006 3:40PM
hey guys, click the picture
Kevin @ Oct 14th 2006 3:47PM
This is blowing my mind. In the link it says the real one is the guy on the left. I think the clue is that asian men never smile for pictures.
John Doe @ Oct 14th 2006 4:26PM
I love seeing smartass commenters getting pwned by their own dang comments.
DarkFader @ Oct 14th 2006 4:18PM
Also, the real one always go sit at the right side of the robot, so the real one is left in the picture :)
Peter Griffin @ Oct 14th 2006 4:19PM
Oh my god, it's jackie chan!
Jeff @ Oct 14th 2006 5:22PM
obviously the robot is on the right.
it is pretty creepy and real looking, but you'd have to be a moron to seriously think the guy on the left is the robot.
look at skin tones. it's obvious.
i really want to see it move. :)
carter @ Oct 14th 2006 6:13PM
I picked the guy on the left of the photo as the real one, but only because his clothes were more creased up. The one on the right looks as if it's been dressed in new clothes.
tiuk @ Oct 14th 2006 7:02PM
Wow, fooled by a robot. That only reinforces the point in my original post. I'm sure it'd still be obvious if you saw them in person, but they're really starting to get to the point where you just can't tell.
strider_mt2k @ Oct 14th 2006 7:30PM
He's a frakin' Cylon!!!!!
Whiplash @ Oct 14th 2006 8:15PM
I figured the one on the right was the robot. But only because of the position of his right arm. It looks like it's cocked funny and he's holding the paper oddly. If I'm wrong, then that's a damn good copy.
eoin @ Oct 14th 2006 8:44PM
well if we we dont shy away from slight homosexuality, look at their pants:
the robot appear to be "politically correct" in that the maker has not included the reproductive organs.
you know when you sit down and your pants are a little baggy for comforts sake, you always get that bulge, clearly the one on the left is the real one.
so what have we learned: if your not sure whether someone might be a robot, pull their pants down
soulless2000 @ Oct 14th 2006 10:13PM
now just need good AI... then who would need to be real person? Just make your own... cept for the babies..
srw @ Oct 14th 2006 9:57PM
In the photo it does look suprisingly realistic but if course this reflects only the skill of the artist who created it and says nothing about its technologic merrits. It may be a nice sculpture, but we gotta see it in motion before we can say anything about it as a robot..
Dispraiser @ Oct 15th 2006 2:46AM
Page 2 and no "I, for one" comment?
I, for one, welcome our new Cylon overlords and anxiously await the arrival of the 6's...
On the topic of this robot, that's amazing. I was certain the one on the right was the real person, but most commenters seem to agree it is the robot. Amazing, I would love to see the thing in action.
srw @ Oct 15th 2006 3:47AM
worst sexbot ever..
JuanJohn @ Oct 15th 2006 4:51AM
The one with BIG hair is robot, Politically correct or not, we all know asian men have small penises so the pulling pants down will not work to identify, trying to fool us!!
Brad @ Sep 14th 2007 4:21AM
Actually, you little racist, there is no corolation between race and penis size.
http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/sex_relationships/facts/penissize.htm
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_penis_size
Next time, don't speak for anyone else. "We all" aren't as narrow minded or incapable of doing a simple Google search as you are.
Racist.
ED @ Oct 15th 2006 6:20AM
Uh... there was an I, for one, comment on the first page, Dispraiser. You must have missed it. But I'm fine with two.
I, for one, figured that the one on the right was the robot cos the hands looked slightly less lifelike, even though they are holding a paper (which is a clever red herring).
Hang on... we know the guy on the left is real... but whose left ??? :P
strider_mt2k @ Oct 15th 2006 7:18AM
Let's pit it against that one that looks like Phillip K. Dick!
Nick @ Oct 15th 2006 7:46AM
Am I the only person here who doesn't think the robot on the right looks anything like the real guy?
Michael @ Oct 15th 2006 11:05AM
Fooled me. I thought the left one was the robot, because the right one was smiling, and the skin tone was more accurate (which is probably due to lighting, in retrospect.)
That's -FREAKY-. That makes for some awesome possibilities for Halloween...
calvin @ Oct 15th 2006 12:23PM
all i can say is, what the hell.... :O
Peanut @ Oct 15th 2006 12:25PM
All asians and asian androids look the same! lol just kidding! but seriously this doppleganger freaks me out... neither one moves so perhaps they are both robots waiting the right time for the kill >_
Catman @ Oct 15th 2006 1:09PM
Holy crap. This is definitely not a good thing. This is only bringing on Asimov's fictional, yet scary as hell, stories of robotic intelligence and the many things that he foresaw as freaky enough to write about. Damn scientists should be doing more useful things like looking into how to replenish our natural resources instead of exhausting them while inadvertantly causing the human race's inevitable demise. Thanks a whole bunch genius jackass. Stop working on that crap, you're bound to bring forth chaos....
funetik @ Oct 15th 2006 2:19PM
Imagine the creator was caught having sex with his robot counterpart. How messed up would that be?
uclatommy @ Oct 15th 2006 2:27PM
Ok people, lets set this straight.
The one on the LEFT is FAKE. The one on the right is real. I know that the original article states that the one on the left is real, but whoever wrote that article is mistaken.
These are the reasons why the right one is real:
1. The one on the left is sitting in a neutral position. It requires no effort to maintain that position while the one on the right is leaning on his arm which requires a sense of balance. The reason why he is leaning in is because he is positioning himself to take the picture. (Something a proud creator would do if someone asked him to take a picture with his creation.)
2. He is smiling for the camera.
3. The right one has more detail in his skin. You can see the veins in his hands.
4. And finally, because I say so.
GuruJ @ Oct 16th 2006 7:21AM
This BBC photo makes it clear which is which:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/pop_ups/06/technology_enl_1160737164/html/1.stm
The android is the one on the right. Fooled me -- I thought the creator was the android was the one on the left as well.
Mike @ Oct 16th 2006 9:09AM
The one on the right is the android.
Check out:
http://es.news.yahoo.com/12102006/24/foto/chinese-visitors-offers-his-camera-to-have-to-get-picture.html
Zou moved over so the visitor can sit in the middle to take the picture. And Zou picked up a piece of paper to look more like the android.
This statement from the article is a bit confusing but true:
"A Chinese visitors offers his camera to have to get a picture of him with Zou Renti, right with a robot twin at left during a robotics expo"
Zou is on the right of the visitor with the robot twin at the visitor's left.
Anyway, the real Zou has to be the one on the left (our perspective looking at the picture)...they wouldn't move the robot for a guy to take a picture.
ezetarget @ Oct 16th 2006 12:34PM
Both are probably Robots.
ezetarget @ Oct 16th 2006 4:39PM
Both are robots, obviously.
seth @ Dec 14th 2006 5:41AM
There both human. The robot is taking the picture.
